Original content drives engagement

This emerging media blog is one of many thousands on the internet all dedicated to keeping up with the latest digital trends.  Many tech writers have already established a significant online following and write quite masterfully on the subject. With so much high quality content competing for readers, how can a first-time blogger draw traffic to their brand new blog?

Fortunately, these experienced tech writers are also willing to share ideas about how to build blog traffic.  A tactic suggested by Rand Fishkin in SEOMoz stood out in the early weeks of buzz-building:

If you’re someone who can produce graphics, take photos, illustrate or even just create funny doodles in MS Paint, you should leverage that talent on your blog. By uploading and hosting images (or using a third-party service like Flickr to embed your images with licensing requirements on that site), you create another traffic source for yourself via Image Search, and often massively improve the engagement and enjoyment of your visitors.

What an appealing concept to a keen amateur photographer and Photoshop tinkerer – which is exactly why this mkhmarketing WordPress blog came to acquire a companion mkhmarketing Flickr photo stream, filled with original social-media themed images.

As more images were created and posted to Flickr it turns out that those well-known tech writers, who initially appeared so daunting, are all actively seeking graphic content to illustrate their own social media blogs and websites.  Soon, something magical began to happen as mkhmarketing images and attributions started showing up on Mashable, Hubspot, Fast Company, SteamFeed, and NPR.  Analytics tracking referrals show that these attributions are working, and Flickr is now one of the top referral sources for traffic to this blog.

There are some fundamental emerging media lessons to be learned from this engaging experience:

  • original content is powerful
  • creativity will be recognized
  • filling a need provides value
  • giving freely is respected
  • attribution will be provided
  • having fun is contagious

If you ever find yourself in need of some social media-themed graphics, a gallery of select social media images is included below.  All of these visuals are available for free with a simple attribution.  Help yourself, and check the mkhmarketing Flickr Photostream often for additional visual content.

  1. I blogged about Seth Godn’s book Permission Marketing, and it’s interesting to take some of your thoughts and include them with his. Original content focused at a target market really allows you to build your brand and relationship with the consumer. From there, integrating action items with your content will allow you to maintain the conversation with the permission of the consumer. You essentially grab their attention with unique and focused content, then get them to give you permission to keep the conversation going through some sort of action step attached to the content.

  2. My spouse and I stumbled over here by a different website and
thought I may as well check things out. I like what I see
so now i am following you. Look forward to checking out your web page for a
    second time.
